River cruising through Europe is unforgettable, but what many travelers do not realize is that the journey does not have to end when the ship docks. One of the best ways to elevate a Rhine River cruise is by adding time in Switzerland, a country that offers dramatic landscapes, iconic rail journeys, and effortless slow travel.

I am Sydney Schellinger, owner of The Poodle Booked It, and this guide is based on real client itineraries, firsthand experience, and years of designing river cruise extensions that actually make sense. Whether you have three days or closer to ten, Switzerland is one of the most rewarding post cruise destinations in Europe.

Why Switzerland Is the Ideal Post River Cruise Destination

Most Rhine River cruises begin or end in Basel. While Basel itself is a charming and cultural city, it is best enjoyed as a one day destination rather than a long stay. Its medieval old town, red sandstone cathedral overlooking the Rhine, vibrant art scene, and walkable streets make it a perfect transition point from river cruising into Switzerland.

From Basel, Switzerland opens up quickly and efficiently thanks to one of the best rail systems in the world. Trains are punctual, scenic, and easy to navigate, allowing travelers to see lakes, mountains, alpine villages, and historic cities without the stress of driving.

A Perfect 3 Day Switzerland Extension

For travelers with limited time, a three day Switzerland itinerary delivers an incredible introduction.

Day One: BaselSpend your day walking the old town, exploring narrow medieval streets, visiting Basel Minster for panoramic views, and sampling local specialties like Läckerli, the city’s famous spiced biscuit. Basel is also home to more museums per capita than any city in Switzerland, making it a cultural powerhouse in a compact setting.

Days Two and Three: LucerneRather than staying in Zurich, I recommend Lucerne as your home base. Lucerne offers what travelers imagine when they think of Switzerland: a shimmering lake, mountain backdrops, cobblestone streets, and storybook charm.

Highlights include walking across Chapel Bridge, visiting the Lion Monument, cruising Lake Lucerne on historic paddle steamers, and climbing the Musegg Wall for sweeping views. Lucerne also serves as a launch point for iconic mountain excursions like Mount Pilatus or Mount Titlis, where you can experience alpine views, cable cars, and even snow in summer.

Expanding to 7 to 9 Days: Slow Travel Switzerland

If you have more time, Switzerland shines when experienced slowly.

After Lucerne, continue by rail to Zermatt, a car free alpine village focused on Matterhorn views, cozy cafés, and mountain railways. From there, board the legendary Glacier Express, one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. This eight hour panoramic route takes you across glaciers, viaducts, and alpine valleys, ending in the Montreux region on Lake Geneva.

From Montreux, travelers can explore medieval castles like Château de Chillon, vineyard terraces cascading into the lake, and French influenced Swiss cuisine. A final stop in Geneva adds global culture, museums, historic cathedrals, and lakeside elegance.

Why This Works So Well After a River Cruise

River cruising is already about unpack once travel, cultural immersion, and relaxed pacing. Switzerland complements that perfectly. Trains replace buses, scenery replaces crowds, and experiences feel intentional rather than rushed.

This type of itinerary allows travelers to check off iconic Swiss experiences while still leaving room to return someday. Switzerland is not a one and done destination, and each visit reveals something new.
